CalMotors specializes in hybrid electric and electric only powertrains. We have worked on a wide range of powertrain sizes and configurations. We have extensive hands-on experience with most components that are marketed to the hybrid and electric only powertrain sector of the automotive industry.
Hybrid powertrains fall into two broad categories - series and parallel configurations. Series hybrids typically include an all-electric powertrain coupled with a generator system that provides charge to the battery pack and addition power for peak loads. The program control module for a Series Hybrid requires complex generator algorithms and a sophisticated battery management system. Series Hybrids are not as efficient as parallel hybrids, but are preferable in systems where electric only operation is dominant and/or where there is a requirement for substantial exportable power.
Like Series Hybrids, Parallel Hybrids use an electric motor(s) to drive the wheels. However, unlike a Series Hybrid, the combustion engine also directly drives the wheels. Parallel Hybrids are more efficient and can achieve better overall ratings for mileage and emissions than Series Hybrids. They are well suited for vehicles that travel long distances or where distances are unpredictable.
Plug-In Hybrids can be either parallel or series hybrids. They are seen by industry experts as the next logical step in the march to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and to reduce harmful emissions. CalMotors is leading the development of Plug-In hybrids and is launching a series of products that are designed to enable the plug-in hybrid market.
Our engineers are extremely knowledgeable about every subsystem that makes up a hybrid or electric only vehicle powertrain. Advances in battery technology make this field very exciting and we have great hope that the advancements that we are now integrating and prototyping will enable a positive change in the climate crisis and will reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
